On Sunday, December 5, 2021 we officially recognize World Soil Day. This day has been set aside to emphasize the significance of maintaining healthy soil for supporting food security, our ecosystems, and water quality as well as mitigating the impacts of climate change.

This year’s theme, ‘Halt Soil Salinization Boost Soil Productivity’ pays special attention to the growing concern of salinization, which has been identified as one of the key factors accounting for unstable soil quality. The increase of high salt content in the soil is detrimental to agricultural productivity as it reduces the ability of crops to effectively take up water and also impacts the availability of micro nutrients.

Soil is a finite natural resource and so we must engage in best practices that can help to preserve and sustain its quality.

We encourage our farmers to utilize the services offered by the Ministry’s Agricultural Land Management Division to include technical expertise on soil fertility, nutrient management and fertilizer applications and advice on the crops suitable for growth based on the soil type on your farms.
