Kingston Jamaica: Agro-Investment Corporation invites one thousand stakeholders in the agriculture sector to attend its inaugural hybrid Argibusiness Investment Forum on April 21, 2022, to garner information on financing for Agribusiness, access to government land, export opportunities, Agro-processing and markets.

The Forum will start at 10:00 a.m. and will continue to 2:00 p.m. will be held under the theme: ‘Investment in Agriculture – Driving Food Security’ and will see participants joining via the Zoom platform while experts in the agriculture sector will gather at the Jamaica Pegasus to deliver their presentations.

Chief Executive Officer at the Agro-Investment Corporation, Dr. Al Powell, says the Forum is organized with the aim of positioning agriculture as a viable business alternative and points out that the focus of the Forum also aligns with the increased emphasis of the Government on food security.

“When we look at prices, our food import bill and the number of persons who don’t have regular access to nutritious food stuff at a reasonable price, we feel there is a need to further market and develop production, to see what we can do along the value chain,” he argues.

In the meantime, Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Thinking and Practice at the UWI, Mona Campus, Dr. K’adamawe K’nife, who will be presenting on ‘agricultural entrepreneurship amongst youth’ adds that the forum will provide stakeholders with valuable information that can boost their business and help those who want to enter the sector.

“For instance, the Ministry has an agricultural services unit which offers support to people to get incentives to take in things, such as drip systems and equipment. Those are done with concessions and can benefit our registered farmers, but a lot of registered farmers don’t know about these things” he shares.

The Agro-Investment Corporation is an Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and has responsibility to promote and facilitate large-scale agricultural investments.

It is also tasked with the responsibility to generate, stimulate, aid, and undertake agricultural development for the advancement of the Jamaican economy.
