Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Pearnel Charles Jr, says he will be focusing on introducing agriculture to the educational system starting from the early childhood stage, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Youth.
Minister Charles Jr was speaking at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) Alumni Association Evening of Excellence, held at The Jamaica Pegasus on April 30, 2022 where several past students were recognised for their contribution to CASE and the agricultural sector. Scholarships valued at $1, 650,000 were also presented to 11 needy students.
The Agriculture and Fisheries Minister also stated that he will be providing support for the expansion of the CASE Alumni’s Mentorship Programme, noting that the Association is critical in nurturing the kind of farmers, agricultural scientists, Jamaicans, adults, and citizenry who are productive and constructive.
He also expressed an interest in working with the Alumni and CASE in solving the challenges confronting the sector to include food security, climate change and praedial larceny.
“If we are to grow Jamaica, we must grow our crops with precision, grow to feed ourselves, CARICOM, the world, grow crops that we think are resilient then we have to educate our farmers on the right way to do it,” he stated
He welcomed the Alumini Association’s contribution into how they can work with the Ministry to build climate resilient crops.
Minister Charles Jr further stated that in an effort to stem the incidences of praedial larceny, he will be launching a task force within the next two weeks and will be seeking recommendations from the Association on how to reduce incidences of praedial larceny.
