Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, says an additional $1billion has been allocated to the Ministry’s Productivity Incentive Programme (PIP) to assist small farmers in light of challenges being experienced because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Shaw said the sum is contained in the early supplementary budget recently tabled in Parliament by Finance and the Public Service Minister, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke.

As it continues its assistance programme to redistribute excess produce from farmers as the country faces the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries has collaborated with Trade Winds Limited, manufacturers of the Tru-Juice brand of juices, to process excess fruit and vegetables.
The Ministry, through RADA, last week  put systems in place to support the movement of the produce from farmers in St Elizabeth to the factory in Bog Walk, St. Catherine,  where processing began Monday, April 6 with an initial 5,000 lbs of tomatoes.

The Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry is moving swiftly to assist approximately 47 farmers, who were affected by fire in Flagaman, St. Elizabeth last Friday (August 16). Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry, Hon. J.C. Hutchinson, said the Ministry will be providing topsoil, grass, seeds, fertilizer and sprays to enable the farmers to regain solid footing.

Jamaica will host the 11th Annual Caribbean Plant Health Directors (CPHD) Forum and the 6th Meeting of the CARICOM Plant Health Directors at the Iberostar Hotel & Suites in Montego Bay, St. James, July 16-19.

Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon Audley Shaw, will be the main presenter at the opening ceremony of the forum on July 16 under the theme ‘Safeguarding Plant Health, Protecting the Environment’.

The forum, which is being held in Jamaica for the first time, will have participants from over 26 member countries in attendance.

Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, the Hon. Audley Shaw, has stated his intention to meet with the Tourism Linkages Council to discuss improved linkages between the micro-business and agriculture sectors and the tourism sector.
Minister Shaw announced this intention as he addressed the 11th Annual Small Business Expo and Conference held May 16 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
