Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Floyd Green, says the Ministry is reorganising the fisheries and aquaculture industries to better serve fishers and fish farmers.

Among the new initiatives being implemented are the development of a new licensing regime, construction of a new $69-million, World Bank-funded hatchery, and introduction of new areas of engagement such as sea cucumbers and deep diving for tuna.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), will be rehabilitating three fishing beaches this year in Clarendon, St. Elizabeth and Hanover.

The rehabilitation will include cold storage and sanitation facilities, safe food market arrangements, fishing equipment storage and general security systems.

Effective September 1, 2021, Jamaica will be opening a limited entry commercial fishery for sea cucumbers.

This announcement was made by Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon Floyd Green, during his sectoral presentation in Parliament yesterday (May 12) under the theme The New Food Security, Agribusiness Development, Climate- Smart Technologies, Export Expansion (FACE) of Food.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries has allocated   $67 million to the fisheries sector through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) to increase production among the country’s fisherfolk.
